You are likely familiar with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using radio waves and a magnetic field to complete a scan of internal body parts for health detection. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a similar technique that looks specifically at blood vessels in the body.

Clear Connect Medical Imaging offers MRA testing services at our primary location in Tallahassee, Florida.

Jump Ahead:

What is an MRA test?

MRA tests use similar technology to an MRI to form images of the body’s blood vessels. This technique is less invasive and less painful than a traditional angiogram, which involves inserting a catheter into the body.

Instead, MRA tests require injecting a special contrast dye into your bloodstream. From here, you will lie flat inside a magnetic resonance image scanner. Your doctor will see your circulatory system clearly as the radio and magnetic waves react to the dye and highlight the blood vessels.

What are MRA scans used for?

Your healthcare provider may request an MRA if they believe you are at risk for a narrowing or blockage of blood vessels in your body. Specifically, MRA tests can detect any of the following conditions:

  • An aneurysm or arterial wall weakness
  • Aortic dissection
  • Artery stenosis
  • Heart disease signs
  • Post-stroke cause
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Congenital heart disease

How to prepare for an MRA

Before an MRA, please remove all piercings and leave your jewelry and valuables at home. Be sure to also disclose whether you have metal within your body from previous surgery. The imaging will take place inside a large tube-like structure that uses magnetic technology, and it can pull at metals or interfere with results.

The MRI machine can make some individuals feel claustrophobic. If you are uncomfortable in tight spaces, talk to your physician about a sedative you can take before the scan. If you decide to take this medication, be sure to have someone available to drive you home.

Overall, MRA scans are safe and should not last longer than one hour. Patients can return to their regular activities immediately after the exam if they do not take a sedative.
