What is enterography?

Enterography is a diagnostic imaging test of the small intestine. These images allow your doctor to see detailed internal pictures of your organs to pinpoint inflammation, bleeding, bowel obstructions or tumors.

An enterography is a noninvasive procedure that is quick, painless and accurate. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about your current medical conditions — especially the possibility of an allergic reaction to contrast dye.

Types of enterography

All enterography exams have a similar goal of viewing the small intestine, but there are two primary types that use different technologies to achieve results. Your doctor will discuss the available options with you and determine which of the following is right for you.

  • Computed tomography (CT) enterography: CT enterography uses computer x-ray technology to take cross-sectional images of your body, specifically focusing on the small intestine and the surrounding organs. This form of x-ray provides more detailed images of tissue and structures compared to traditional skeletal x-rays.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) enterography: Before an MR enterography, patients will take an oral and intravenous contrast dye that highlights the small intestine. The MR technology will then detect the dye with its magnetic field to create images. This technology does not use radiation or radioactive materials.

How long does enterography take?

Regardless of which form of enterography you receive, the procedure can take around 1.5 hours.

Your doctor will likely ask you to refrain from eating or drinking anything but clear liquids for three hours before the procedure. Once you arrive, you will change into a hospital gown or medical scrubs (top and pants) and remove all jewelry and metal objects so nothing will interfere with the results.

Before the scan, you will need to drink a few glasses of liquid containing the contrast material over the next 45 minutes. After you are finished, you will lie on the table, and a technologist will use the appropriate technology to capture the enterography images.
