What Is an X-ray?

envision radiology mission

An x-ray is a form of diagnostic imaging that uses electromagnetic energy to show internal visuals of bones, tissues or organs. X-rays usually detect bone injuries, but the energy beams can also identify smaller complications like tumors or blood vessel blockages.

The external radiation used in an x-ray procedure will pass through body structures to produce images onto specially treated plates — much like camera film. Solid structures like bone will appear the clearest in a florescent white color. Soft tissues like blood, fat, skin and muscle will appear dark gray.

Types of x-ray

Several imaging technologies today use radiation for medical image generation.

  • Traditional x-ray: When you think of x-ray technology, the conventional x-ray is likely what comes to mind. This type is the form described above — the simple detection of solid structures in the body using high-powered energy beams. Most commonly, medical professionals use traditional x-ray on areas like the abdomen, bones, chest and teeth.
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan: A CT scan uses x-ray technology to produce cross-section images of internal organs, bones and tissues. This process is done with a machine that moves in a semi-circle around your body, capturing slices of the affected area to create a detailed picture. CT scans can also detect blood vessels, known as computed tomography angiography (CTA).
  • Mammogram: A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. These results can help doctors detect and diagnose abnormalities.

How to prepare for an x-ray

results

Your specific x-ray test can require different preparations. Remember to clarify these instructions with your doctor beyond the following standard practices. Generally, you should:

  • Always discuss your health history, medications or allergies with your doctor.
  • Tell your provider if you are pregnant.
  • Avoid lotions, perfume or creams as they can interfere with results.
  • Remove all metal objects from your body, including piercings, jewelry, hearing aids or hairpins.
  • Wear comfortable clothing for your exam, as we will ask that you change into medical scrubs (a top and pants) or a hospital gown.

The x-ray procedure

Some x-rays may require contrast dye which can help highlight a specific area of your body in the x-ray. You can receive this substance as an oral liquid, injection or enema.

Depending on the area of the x-ray, you may sit, stand or lie down on a table. The technologist may ask you to move your body into multiple positions to capture all angles of the affected area.

You may resume your regular activities following an x-ray. Clear Connect Medical Imaging will deliver the images quickly to your provider so they can review them and contact you with the results.
