What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a noninvasive and painless procedure done to produce an image. This test does not use radiation — instead, it uses high-frequency sound waves to locate organs and other structures within the body.

What is a sonogram?

While the ultrasound is the process, the sonogram is the result. A sonogram is the image produced from an ultrasound that doctors use to analyze internal structures.

Overall, the ultrasound and sonogram are important components of this medical imaging exam. One cannot exist without the other.

How do ultrasounds and sonograms work?

Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to produce a sonogram. Perhaps you have seen an ultrasound in a movie or TV show where a pregnant mother attends a doctor’s appointment to see how their baby is growing. In most cases, this accurately depicts how an ultrasound procedure works.

A sonographer will apply a gel to your skin above the area that needs to be examined. This gel will help prevent air pockets or sound wave blockage from interfering with the results. A handheld device — called a transducer — will be pressed against your skin, sending the sound waves into your body. These sound waves will bounce off organs, fluids and tissues and instantly display on a computer screen.

The sonogram is saved and sent to a doctor for interpretation. This whole process can take around 30 to 60 minutes, and you can return to your regular activities immediately after.

Why would I need an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds are primarily associated with pregnancy exams. While this is often the case, ultrasounds can help check for internal swelling, infections or other damage in various areas around the body. Some of the most common organs evaluated with ultrasounds include:

  • Heart
  • Bladder
  • Liver
  • Spleen
  • Ovaries
  • Uterus
  • Gallbladder
  • Kidneys
  • Pancreas
  • Thyroid
