Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an advanced technology that uses computer-generated radio waves with a magnetic field to produce a detailed image of internal body organs and tissues. This imaging test is painless, noninvasive and does not use radiation, making it a frequent choice for diagnostic imaging.

What does an MRI show?

MRI exam results show detailed images of the inside of the body for diagnostic or analysis purposes. Once a doctor reviews the results, you can receive a diagnosis and begin the necessary treatment.

MRIs are used on various internal body structures, such as:

  • Heart
  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Spleen
  • Digestive tract
  • Spine and spinal cord
  • Uterus and ovaries
  • Prostate gland
  • Blood vessels
  • Breast tissue
  • Lymph nodes

Types of MRI

Clear Connect Medical Imaging offers multiple forms of MRIs which can specialize in areas of the body. The specific tests we offer include:

  • Open bore: If you are uncomfortable in enclosed spaces, an open bore MRI machine has at least one open side. This option provides more space without compromising picture quality.
  • High-field: A traditional MRI machine has high-field capabilities with powerful magnets — up to 1.5T. An MRI with this machine can take around 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP): This specialized MRI focuses on the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and surrounding bile and pancreatic ducts. A doctor usually orders an MRCP to determine the cause of abdominal pain.
  • Spectroscopy: Spectroscopy can identify tumors and other metabolic diseases while providing additional information about the body’s cells. These MRIs can often help identify an individual’s risk of malignancy index (RMI).

What to expect for your MRI scan

At Clear Connect Medical Imaging, we will guide you through the MRI procedure. Our skilled and compassionate team will be there to answer any questions you have along the way.

Before

There are no eating or medication restrictions before an MRI procedure unless your doctor states otherwise. You will be asked to change into a hospital gown when you arrive. Be sure to remove all items that might interfere with the magnetic imaging, including:

  • Jewelry
  • Eyeglasses
  • Hairpins
  • Watches
  • Underwire bras
  • Dentures
  • Hearing aids

During

A traditional MRI machine is a long tube with a movable table that slides in and out of the opening. Most people get through this exam without anxiety from the enclosed space. However, if you feel you need extra assistance in this environment, medication is available to help you feel sleepy and relaxed.

You will not feel the magnetic field inside the machine but will hear repetitive tapping or thumping. The whole process generally takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After

If you do not take medication to help you relax, you can return to your regular activities immediately. If you require medication, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home.
